For the first time since 1938, there was a contest for the election of one person to represent the Deanery of Guernsey in the House of Laity of the General Synod of the Church of England.
Those eligible to vote were the fifty lay members of Guernsey Deanery Synod.
Three candidates stood for election. Ruth Abernethy was elected. She will join the Very Revd Mike Keirle, Dean of Jersey, and the person elected by the lay members of Jersey Deanery Synod, to represent the Channel Islands in the General Synod of the Church of England for five years. The Synod will be inaugurated on Tuesday 16 November.
The Dean of Guernsey, the Very Revd Tim Barker, said, 'I am grateful to the three chandidates for standing in this election, and wish Ruth Abernethy well as she represents Guernsey in the General Synod. It is remarkable that 98% of the voting papers issued were returned. I look forward to confirmation that this was the highest level of engagement with this year's General Synod elections anywhere in the Church of England.'
